In Pursuit of Health
Assessment of speaking, understanding, reading and writing.
The strengths and challenges of the client's communication will be evaluated using formal assessment tools and clinical skills. As well, the impact of language impairment on everyday communication will be explored with the client and their close communication partner.
EDUCATION AND SUPPORT
There is good evidence for the benefits of specific individual and group education and support programs for individuals with PPA and their families.
Specific evidenced based information relevant to the client’s condition and needs will be provided. Knowledge can positively affect the ability of the individual client and their family and caregivers to live successfully with communication impairment.
IMPAIRMENT DIRECTED THERAPY
These are treatments, with a rehabilitation focus, that directly target language impairment with an aim to maintain maximum independent function.
An evidenced based treatment plan is developed in collaboration with the client and their close communication partner. Options for therapy include individual face to face treatment, Telehealth and home treatment programmes all individually tailored to the specific needs of the client.
These are interventions that aim to increase environmental support and reduce communication barriers thereby improving social participation and activity for the person with communication impairment.
Compensatory approaches are a range of methods which support communication, and include “any strategy, technique or tool that enhances, replaces, augments or supplements an individual’s communication capabilities” (Gibbons & Fried-Oken, 2009).
