COMPREHENSIVE ASSESSMENT

Detailed assessment of speaking, understanding, reading and writing skills.

In a comprehensive assessment, the strengths and challenges of the individual's communication will be evaluated using formal assessment tools and clinical skills. As well, the impact of language impairment on everyday communication will be explored with the client and their close communication partner.

EDUCATION AND SUPPORT

Research demonstrates the benefits of specific education and support programs for people with communication impairment and their families.

Specific evidenced based information relevant to the individual’s condition and needs will be provided. Increased knowledge and support from a specialist speech pathologist can improve ability to cope and well being. As well, some individuals choose to meet peers and this support reduces social isolation.

IMPAIRMENT DIRECTED THERAPY

These are treatments, with a rehabilitation focus, that directly target language impairment with an aim to maintain maximum independent function.

Evidenced based treatment plans are developed in collaboration with the individual and their close communication partner. Options for therapy include individual face to face treatment, telehealth and home treatment programmes, all individually tailored to the specific needs of the individual.

COMPENSATORY APPROACHES

These are interventions that aim to increase environmental support and reduce communication barriers thereby improving social participation and activity for the person with communication impairment.

Compensatory approaches are a range of methods which support communication, and include “any strategy, technique or tool that enhances, replaces, augments or supplements an individual’s communication capabilities” (Gibbons & Fried-Oken, 2009).

Fee Information

Taylor-Rubin Speech Language Pathology is a private practice offering in person and telehealth speech pathology services. A letter of referral from your GP, neurologist or other relevant consultant is not essential but is preferred.

Speech Pathology services are not covered by Medicare but limited Medicare rebates are available with a Team Care Plan. This should be discussed with your GP.
Individuals with private health insurance may have Speech Pathology services covered by their plan. Individuals should check with their private health insurance provider.
The Department of Veteran Affairs supports Speech Pathology services, recommended by the GP, for Gold Card holders.
Participants in the NDIS can also request Speech Pathology support through their NDIS plan.

These are the most common appointment types. Other appointment types may be advised.

Note: fees for services funded by DVA and NDIS will attract the standard recommended fee for service provided by the funding body (i.e. DVA or NDIS).

Cancellation Fees

Please provide us with 3 hours notice if you wish to cancel or change your appointment.

Any cancellations or changes to appointments within 3 hours may attract a cancellation fee equivalent to the out of pocket fee of your appointment.
